Project Overview

In order to make an omelette, you first have to break some eggs.

I know it doesn’t make any sense and has nothing to do with the digitalization of this church, but yet it does.

In order to achieve our quality mark, we had to “break” some other churches first. Pfarrkirche Pregarten represents a tipping point in our production, where all the R&D, experiments, tests, and troubleshooting finally clicked, and the desired level of quality was achieved.

Funny enough, it seems you need to scan some churches first before you can scan churches.

History Time

Neo-Gothic Parish Church | Pregarten, Upper Austria

Built between 1893 and 1897 by cathedral architect Otto Schirmer, the Pfarrkirche Pregarten is a textbook example of Neo-Gothic Historicism done right. Three-aisled nave, rubble stone masonry on the outside, and an interior conceived as a “Gesamtkunstwerk.”

The original church that stood in the town square was demolished in 1903. A Marian column marks the spot today. Ending marks only a new beginning.

Supersplat

The Gaussian training was made using Postshot, and the alignment was done in RealityScan. Yes, there is also a secret sauce that led to this level of quality, but every chef has their own secrets.

The Supersplat scene below benefits from LODs, generated directly within Supersplat. In simple terms, a LOD (Level of Detail) system automatically swaps in lower-resolution versions of the splat cloud as the camera moves further away, and switches back to full detail up close. This keeps the viewer smooth and responsive, even on a splat as dense as this one, without you ever noticing the swap happening.

The Cross

Sometimes in life, there are little things that can turn the tides. In the case of scanning exterior churches, probably the most difficult part is capturing the top cross, especially if it’s very reflective and the sun is at its highest.

Solution? Nothing digital sculpting can’t solve!
