About

During my recent trip to Greece, I had the opportunity to explore the Venetian Castle in Parga, an iconic 14th-century fortress that played a crucial role in protecting the town from invasions. Amidst the historical ruins, I came across a cannon that stood out as the perfect subject for a detailed photogrammetry scan. Now, this unique piece has been transformed into a high-quality digital asset for use in various production environments, including Unreal Engine 5. This project was not just about capturing a historical artifact but also about preserving cultural heritage in a digital form.

Historical Context

The Venetian Castle in Parga dates back to the 14th century and was strategically built to protect the town from pirate invasions and later Ottoman forces. Over the centuries, it served as a crucial defense point, bearing witness to various historical events. The cannons scattered across the castle grounds are relics of its turbulent past, symbolizing its strength and resilience. Capturing one of these cannons through photogrammetry felt like preserving a small piece of history, allowing others to explore and appreciate this ancient artifact in a digital form. By scanning and recreating this cannon in 3D, I aim to contribute to the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage.

Applications

The process of capturing this cannon through photogrammetry was both challenging and rewarding. By transforming a centuries-old artifact into a digital 3D model, I have not only preserved a piece of history but also created a versatile asset for use in virtual production, gaming, and educational environments. As digital preservation becomes increasingly important, photogrammetry offers a way to document and share cultural heritage in an accessible manner.
This cannon asset can now be utilized in various ways. Game developers can integrate it into historically themed environments, virtual production teams can use it for set extensions, and educators can use it as an interactive tool to teach about historical fortifications. This project showcases the powerful intersection of history and technology, allowing us to explore the past through modern digital means
